2019 - 2020
1st-6th Grade:
First Semester Unit of Study: Philanthropy
What is philanthropy? Can I be a philanthropist and have a philanthropic attitude and lifestyle? How can I make a positive difference in my small circle of influence? Can I make an impact on a larger scale? We will look at all of these questions and more in this unit study. The culmination of this unit will be a "Philanthropy Phamily Phair" (yes, I know the spelling is wrong . . . just go with it). Stay tuned for more details.
Second Semester Unit of Study: Innovation Nation
Are you a dreamer? Do you have a big imagination and even bigger ideas? Are you the kind of person who is willing to ask, what if? Then this unit is for you.
"A vista into a world of wondrous ideas, signifying man's achievements... a step into the future, with predictions of constructive things to come. Tomorrow offers new frontiers in science, adventure and ideas: the Atomic Age, the challenge of outer space, and the hope for a peaceful and united world." - Walt Disney (July 17, 1955)
In this unit we will not only learn about, but we will become innovators and inventors. It's going to be exciting!
In both of these units, students will work on research, presentation, and communication skills. Students will experience math, history, science, literature, economics, writing, and hands-on and verbal problem solving.
7th-8th Grade:
Unit of Study: Breaking Barriers in History (National History Day Competition)
Research is the name of the game at this level. But, not just the acquisition of general knowledge. These students ask the hard question in research - "So what?" They look beneath the facts and come up with some substantial ideas/reasons that dwell under the surface. To accomplish this, students complete an extensive research project for our regional National History Day competition normally held in February. Seventh and eighth grade students may work individually or in a group; they will also be able to present their work in one of four ways: an exhibit, a performance, a documentary, or a website.
